Afghan Cricket Shapoor Dies at 38 After Battle With Cancer

Former Afghanistan fast bowler Shapoor Zadran, one of the pioneers of Afghan cricket, has died in India at the age of 38 after a battle with cancer, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed.

Zadran had been undergoing treatment at a local hospital in India, where he passed away. The ACB expressed profound grief over his death, describing him as one of the architects of Afghanistan’s rise in international cricket.

In a statement, the board said Zadran’s dedication, passion and determination played a vital role in laying the foundations of Afghan cricket and helping the national team establish itself on the global stage.

“Shapoor Zadran was among the prominent figures who helped build Afghan cricket. His hard work and unwavering commitment were instrumental in the growth and development of the game in Afghanistan,” the board said.

The ACB added that Zadran inspired generations of young cricketers through both his performances on the field and his resilience off it, encouraging aspiring players to pursue their dreams despite challenges.

The board extended its condolences to his family, friends, former teammates and the wider cricket community, saying his legacy would continue to inspire future generations of Afghan cricketers.

Several current and former Afghanistan players visited Zadran during his treatment in India. The board said details of his funeral prayers would be announced later after consultation with his family.

Zadran was one of the first generation of Afghan cricketers who helped transform the national team from an emerging side into a respected international competitor.

During his career, he represented Afghanistan in 44 One-Day Internationals and 36 Twenty20 Internationals, earning a reputation as a left-arm fast bowler who contributed to several memorable victories.

His passing marks the end of an era for Afghan cricket, with tributes continuing to pour in from across the cricketing world.
