Lahore: Former federal minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Hammad Azhar has been taken into police custody in Lahore in connection with cases pending against him.

According to police sources, Azhar was detained near the RA Bazaar area after returning to Lahore while travelling towards Multan.

Sources said police had stopped him during checking on his way to Multan and asked him to produce his documents. He later returned to Lahore and went to a friend’s residence, where police subsequently took him into custody.

Police sources said Azhar was wanted in connection with the GOR. Gate attack case in Lahore. The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) had declared him a fugitive in the case and issued permanent arrest warrants against him.

Following his detention, Azhar was handed over to the Investigation Wing for further questioning and investigation into the cases registered against him.

Legal proceedings

Azhar’s detention comes amid his ongoing efforts to seek relief from the courts.

According to available information, the PTI leader had approached both the Lahore High Court and Peshawar High Court for protective bail in cases registered against him.

The arrest marks a new development in the legal challenges faced by the PTI leader, who had remained away from public political activity amid the cases against him.

Azhar had previously been given the responsibility of PTI Punjab president. However, after cases were registered against him, he resigned from the party position.

His detention is expected to bring renewed focus to the cases pending against him, particularly the GOR. Gate attack case, as investigators proceed with the next stage of the legal process.

Police have yet to disclose further details about the investigation or the immediate court proceedings expected following his arrest.
