Pakistan team’s phones reportedly taken ahead of Edgbaston Test

Birmingham: The Pakistan cricket team has attracted fresh attention ahead of the third and final Test against England following reports that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken custody of mobile phones belonging to players and members of the team management.

According to Indian news outlet NDTV, the phones have reportedly been collected by the PCB and are expected to remain in the board’s custody until the conclusion of the Edgbaston Test.

The report, however, does not identify the players or officials whose devices were allegedly taken. The PCB has also not issued an official statement confirming the move or explaining the reason behind it.

It remains unclear whether the reported measure applies to the entire Pakistan squad or only certain players and team officials.

The development comes amid significant changes within Pakistan’s cricket setup. The PCB has made several adjustments to the squad and coaching staff ahead of the final Test, while the removal of some players and coaches has already generated considerable discussion.

Restrictions on mobile phones and other communication devices are already part of international cricket regulations. The International Cricket Council (ICC) prohibits players and officials from carrying or using such devices in designated restricted areas, including specific areas of the dressing room during matches.

ICC regulations also restrict the use of phones, laptops and other communication equipment by playing members and officials in designated areas.

However, retaining players’ phones until the end of a Test match, if confirmed, would appear to be broader than the standard match-day restrictions.

In the absence of confirmation from the PCB, the reason for the reported decision remains unclear. Possible considerations could include team discipline, security or internal communication protocols, but there has been no official indication of the motive.

The report has added to the attention surrounding Pakistan’s preparations for the series finale at Edgbaston, with the team facing England in the final Test amid ongoing changes to its playing and management setup.
