Trump says US-Iran deal to be signed Sunday

Washington/Islamabad: US President Donald Trump has announced that a proposed US-Iran agreement will be signed on Sunday, claiming that the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened immediately after the deal is finalized.
In a detailed statement posted on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said the agreement would mark a major shift in relations with Iran and would replace the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA), which he again criticized as “a pathway” for Tehran to develop nuclear weapons.
He claimed that the new arrangement would block Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, asserting that Tehran “no longer desires” such capability and would be prevented from purchasing, manufacturing, or pursuing nuclear arms under any circumstances.
Trump further stated that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz would follow immediately after the signing of the agreement, adding that his administration maintained a more constructive relationship with Iran compared to previous US governments.
He also reiterated criticism of the Obama-era nuclear deal, particularly the release of Iranian funds, saying no financial payments would be made under the proposed agreement. He noted that Iran’s assets worth billions of dollars remain frozen in US and European banks.

On Iran’s nuclear programme, Trump said it would be dismantled and destroyed “safely when the time comes,” adding that the United States would eventually gain access to Iran’s nuclear material “buried in the mountains,” which would be removed and destroyed using advanced military capabilities if required.
In a strongly worded warning, he added that while the US hoped for cooperation, it retained a “last resort” option, which it did not wish to use.
Meanwhile, reports indicated that Pakistan has played a mediating role in facilitating contacts between Washington and Tehran. Field Marshal Asim Munir was said to have been actively involved in diplomatic outreach, including visits to Iran, while Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi reportedly conveyed messages during the process.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had earlier stated that a peace agreement between the US and Iran could be finalized within 24 hours. Trump also shared Sharif’s remarks on social media.
Arab media reports further claimed that an Iranian delegation led by Abbas Araqchi is expected to visit Pakistan on Sunday, possibly to attend the signing ceremony of the agreement.
