Peshawar Court Sentences Investigating Officer to 10 Years Imprisonment
A sessions court in Peshawar has sentenced a police investigating officer to 10 years in prison for negligence in the investigation of a murder case.
The verdict was delivered by Additional Sessions Judge Imtiaz Ali, who found investigating officer Hidayatullah guilty under Sections 193 and 186. The court ordered his immediate transfer to Central Jail Peshawar to serve the sentence.
According to the judgment, the officer failed to send key digital evidence, including a CCTV DVR and hard drive, to the relevant forensic laboratory for examination. He was also found to have neglected recording statements from eyewitnesses, adversely affecting the investigation.
During the proceedings, the accused argued that official workload and professional commitments had prevented him from submitting the evidence for forensic analysis. However, the court rejected the explanation, ruling that professional responsibilities could not justify such serious lapses in a criminal investigation.
The judgment noted that the officer failed to provide satisfactory responses to several questions raised by the court regarding the handling of the case.
The courtroom also witnessed dramatic scenes when the convicted officer allegedly attempted to flee after the verdict. Security personnel intervened and took him into custody before he could escape.
The court observed that negligence in investigations and mishandling of evidence undermine the justice system and warrant strict legal action.
