Islamabad: A police team came under fire from the accomplices of a suspect in custody during a recovery operation in the jurisdiction of Sihala Police Station, Islamabad, police said.

According to an Islamabad police spokesperson, the team was returning after conducting a recovery operation based on information and leads provided by arrested suspect Asif, alias Bablu, when four of his alleged accomplices, who were lying in wait along the route, opened indiscriminate fire in an attempt to free him.

The suspect was reportedly injured by gunfire from his own accomplices during the attack.

Police said the team remained safe due to the use of bulletproof jackets and other protective measures. The injured suspect was shifted to a hospital for medical treatment.

Police said Asif had been arrested in connection with the death of a young man who fell from a bridge while allegedly trying to escape a snatching attempt in the Sihala area. A case concerning the incident was registered at Sihala Police Station, with Asif booked on murder charges in connection with the robbery.

According to police, the suspect has a criminal record involving dozens of cases related to theft, robbery and highway banditry. He was also wanted by police in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

Police said stolen property allegedly taken during various criminal activities was recovered from the suspect.

Meanwhile, search operations are underway to apprehend his remaining accomplices, the spokesperson said.
