Sir Richard Richardson Set for PSL Debut as Referee

Lahore: The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is set to welcome a new era of officiating as Sir Richard Richardson, a seasoned member of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, prepares to make his PSL debut when the tournament kicks off on March 26 at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

Richardson, who has previously officiated four Tests and three T20Is in Pakistan—including the high-profile T20I series between Pakistan and World XI—brings international experience that is expected to raise the standard of match oversight in the 11th edition of Pakistan’s premier cricket league.

This season, PSL 11 will feature 44 high-octane matches played across Lahore and Karachi from March 26 to May 3. Alongside Richardson, the league will see a strong lineup of both local and international umpires, including Ahsan Raza (Pakistan), Christopher Gaffaney (New Zealand), Allahudien Palekar (South Africa), and Alexander Wharf (England). Notably, Palekar and Sharfuddoula Saikat will be making their PSL debuts, signaling a fresh infusion of global officiating talent.

Roshan Mahanama, a familiar figure in PSL officiating since 2017, will continue as head of the playing control team, extending his tally to 71 PSL matches. The first game, featuring Lahore Qalandars and Hyderabad Kingsmen, will see Wharf and Raza as on-field umpires, with Asif Yaqoob handling TV duties and Tariq Rasheed as the fourth umpire.

With an expanded pool of match referees and umpires—including Ali Naqvi, Kamran Chaudhary, Bilal Khilji, Iftikhar Ahmed, Aleem Moosa, and Sohail Idrees, the league aims to combine competitive cricket with world-class officiating, ensuring fairness, accuracy, and smooth management across all matches.

This shift in officiating focus highlights PSL’s commitment not just to thrilling cricket but also to strengthening governance and integrity in the game, giving fans and players confidence in the league’s professional standards.
