Islamabad: Shehbaz Sharif is set to travel to Riyadh within the next 48 hours on the invitation of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in a move that highlights intensifying regional coordination following the high-stakes US-Iran talks hosted in Islamabad.

The visit comes at a critical moment for regional diplomacy, as Pakistan seeks to align closely with key Gulf partners amid rising uncertainty after the inconclusive negotiations between Washington and Tehran. The Islamabad dialogue—marking the first direct engagement between the two sides in over a decade since the Iranian Revolution—ended without a formal agreement, leaving fragile ceasefire arrangements under strain.

Diplomatic sources suggest that consultations in Riyadh will go beyond routine bilateral engagement, focusing instead on evolving security dynamics in the Gulf, energy stability, and coordinated responses to escalating tensions.

The reported US decision to impose a maritime blockade around Iranian ports has further complicated the situation, raising concerns about disruptions to global energy flows and the risk of renewed conflict.

Pakistan’s outreach to Saudi Arabia also underscores its growing role as a diplomatic intermediary. By hosting the US-Iran talks, Islamabad positioned itself as a facilitator of dialogue, even as the 21-hour negotiations failed to produce a breakthrough.

Economic cooperation is expected to remain high on the agenda, particularly in light of a recently announced $5 billion support package from Riyadh and Doha. The financial backing is seen as crucial for Pakistan’s economic stability at a time of external pressure.

The prime minister will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including senior military and diplomatic leadership, reflecting the strategic weight of the visit.

Notably, the trip follows the signing of a mutual defence pact between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia in September 2025, which commits both countries to collective security in the event of external aggression.

With tensions still simmering despite a temporary ceasefire, Pakistan’s engagement with Saudi Arabia signals a broader effort to consolidate alliances and maintain stability in an increasingly volatile region.
