Obituary: Asha Bhosle — A Golden Voice Falls Silent at 92

Mumbai: Legendary Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle has passed away at the age of 92, marking the end of a remarkable era in South Asian music.
According to Indian media reports, she had been admitted to hospital a day earlier due to severe fatigue and a chest infection, and her death was attributed to multiple organ failure.
Her granddaughter Zinai Bhosle had earlier shared news of her hospitalization on social media.
Her last rites are scheduled to be performed at Shivaji Park in Mumbai, with family members confirming that the public will also be allowed to pay their final respects at her residence.
Asha Bhosle leaves behind not only an unparalleled musical legacy but also significant financial assets. Her total wealth is estimated at around Rs 250 crore, alongside properties worth approximately Rs 100 crore in cities such as Mumbai and Pune.

In addition to her music career, she successfully ventured into business, founding an international restaurant chain that began in Dubai in 2002 and expanded to the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, and the United Kingdom, including cities like Birmingham and Manchester.
Born on September 8, 1933, Asha Bhosle grew up in a deeply musical family and was the younger sister of iconic singer Lata Mangeshkar. Trained in classical music by her father, Dinanath Mangeshkar, she began her artistic journey at the age of just 10 in 1943.
Rising to fame in the 1950s, she went on to become one of the most celebrated and versatile voices in global music history.
Over a career spanning decades, she recorded more than 12,000 songs in over 20 languages, including Hindi film songs, ghazals, qawwali, classical, pop, and cabaret. She lent her voice to more than 1,000 films, captivating generations with her expressive and dynamic singing style.
Her contributions earned her numerous accolades, including seven Filmfare Awards. In 2000, she was honored with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and in 2008, she received the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award.
In 2011, she was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world’s most-recorded female singer.
Despite limited royalty structures in her early years, her prolific body of work ensured sustained financial success. She continued to perform live concerts around the world well into her later years, maintaining both her popularity and income.
