Islamabad: The National Institute of Health (NIH) has issued a public advisory on heatstroke prevention and management, urging health authorities and citizens to take precautionary measures as temperatures continue to rise across the country.

The advisory, issued by the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) at NIH, warned that Pakistan is experiencing increasingly severe climate-related challenges, including more frequent and intense heatwaves linked to global warming.

According to the NIH, the frequency and impact of heatwaves have increased in recent years, raising the risk of heat-related illnesses and deaths. The institute emphasized the need for immediate steps to strengthen preparedness and response mechanisms to prevent and manage heatstroke cases effectively.

The advisory highlighted that avoiding direct exposure to sunlight, particularly during peak daytime hours, and maintaining adequate hydration are among the most effective ways to prevent heat-related complications.

Citizens have been advised to drink plenty of fluids, consume foods containing adequate salts and minerals, wear hats or other protective head coverings, and choose light-coloured, lightweight and loose-fitting clothing during hot and humid weather conditions.

The NIH also called on health authorities to intensify public awareness campaigns and improve preparedness measures to reduce the health risks associated with extreme heat.

The advisory comes as several parts of the country continue to experience high temperatures, prompting concerns about the growing public health impacts of climate change and extreme weather events.
