Islamabad: Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has placed several upper districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on high alert following the arrival of a new weather system that could trigger flash floods, landslides and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).

Officials warned that heavy rainfall combined with rising temperatures may increase the risk of sudden flooding in mountainous regions, particularly in glacier-fed valleys.

The districts declared highly vulnerable include Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Swat, Upper Dir, Upper Kohistan and Mansehra.

The disaster management authority has instructed district administrations to closely monitor glacial areas, activate early warning systems and remain prepared for emergency response operations to reduce potential loss of life and property.

Residents and tourists have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel near rivers, streams and mountainous routes during the ongoing weather spell. People living in low-lying or vulnerable areas have also been urged to remain alert and shift to safer places if conditions worsen.

Authorities have further directed local administrations to keep evacuation centres functional, conduct emergency drills and ensure rescue teams and machinery remain ready for rapid deployment.

The PDMA also cautioned citizens to immediately move to safe areas if they observe sudden changes in water flow or hear sounds of falling rocks, mudslides or rushing water in mountainous regions.
