Islamabad: In an unprecedented diplomatic development, Pakistan has moved to the center of global attention as it prepares to host high, stakes negotiations between the United States and Iran, talks that come in the aftermath of a brief but intense regional conflict.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Thursday met with US Ambassador Natalie Baker to finalize arrangements for the upcoming dialogue, scheduled to begin in Islamabad on Friday. The meeting underscored Pakistan’s growing role as a mediator amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The talks follow a fragile two-week ceasefire between Washington and Tehran, reached just before a deadline set by US President Donald Trump. The conflict had erupted after coordinated US-Israeli strikes reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, triggering retaliatory attacks across the region.

According to US officials, the American delegation will be led by Vice President JD Vance, accompanied by senior figures including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. All are expected to arrive in Islamabad as “special guests” for the negotiations.

During the meeting, Ambassador Baker commended Pakistan’s “sincere and proactive diplomacy,” highlighting its role in facilitating communication between the two adversaries. Naqvi assured that comprehensive security and logistical measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of all delegations.
The diplomatic activity has led to sweeping security arrangements across Islamabad. Authorities have imposed strict traffic controls, including the closure of key arteries such as the Expressway from Zero Point to Korral Chowk, along with diversions on major routes due to delegation movements.
Heavy traffic has been temporarily banned from entering the capital, while alternative routes have been designated for commuters traveling between cities such as Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Peshawar. Officials have urged citizens to plan ahead and cooperate with traffic personnel.
The heightened security has also impacted daily life, with examinations at several government schools near the Red Zone postponed as a precaution.
As Islamabad braces for the arrival of global power brokers, the talks mark a critical test of Pakistan’s diplomatic leverage—positioning it not just as a host, but as a key intermediary in one of the most volatile geopolitical crises in recent history.
