Federal Budget to Be Presented on June 10

Islamabad: A key breakthrough has been achieved between the government and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on the upcoming federal budget, with both sides agreeing to recommend June 10 as the date for its presentation in the National Assembly.

The development came during an important consultative meeting held in Islamabad on Wednesday, where detailed discussions were held on budget priorities, development projects, and the economic framework for the next fiscal year. The PPP has also decided to support the government in the upcoming budget, according to sources.

The government side was represented by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Bilal Azhar Kayani, while the PPP delegation included Senator Sherry Rehman, Saleem Mandviwala, Naveed Qamar, and Raja Pervez Ashraf. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah joined the meeting via video link.

A statement issued after the meeting said both sides carried out a comprehensive review of the federal budget, Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), development spending, and key economic priorities for the next fiscal year. Matters related to public welfare and development initiatives were also discussed in detail.

Sources said the PPP presented its proposals and demands during the consultation, many of which were agreed upon in principle, including the inclusion of PPP-backed development projects in the federal budget.

According to sources, the PPP has decided to support the government’s budget and is expected to vote in favour, with party leadership also conveying assurances to the government delegation.

Speaking to media after the meeting, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb confirmed that the federal budget will be presented on June 10. He said the government is making efforts to avoid imposing new taxes on the public, while focusing on improving tax enforcement and broadening the tax base to enhance revenue collection.

He added that the government aims to take all stakeholders, including the IMF and coalition partners, into confidence. He further said the meeting was “very positive” and that further consultations will continue later this week.
