London: At just 20 years old, Shoaib Bashir’s selection for England’s Test tour of India in early 2024 stunned many cricket observers. With only 10 first-class wickets to his name at the time, the young off-spinner appeared to be an unlikely choice.
Yet within months, Bashir had transformed from an unknown county cricketer into England’s first-choice Test spinner, proving that faith in raw talent can sometimes outweigh experience.
His international journey did not begin smoothly.
Visa delays forced him to miss the start of England’s tour of India, but once he joined the squad, he wasted little time making an impact. Bashir claimed 18 wickets in just three Test matches, including impressive five-wicket hauls in Ranchi and Dharamsala, playing a pivotal role in England’s campaign.

Ironically, Bashir’s rapid rise on the international stage came while opportunities at county level remained limited.
His cricket journey began in Surrey’s youth system, but he was released at the age of 17. Rather than giving up, Bashir continued to develop his game through Middlesex and Berkshire before earning a trial with Somerset.
His performances for Somerset’s second XI impressed enough to secure a professional contract ahead of the 2023 season.

The emergence of young spinning all-rounder Archie Vaughan further reduced Bashir’s chances, leading to loan spells with Worcestershire and Glamorgan in search of valuable match experience.
Despite limited county exposure, Somerset rewarded his potential with a two-year contract extension following an encouraging first season. Bashir also strengthened his credentials by impressing on England Lions’ tour of the United Arab Emirates in late 2023, performances that helped put him firmly on the national selectors’ radar.
