Rawalpindi: Pakistan won the toss and elected to field first against Australia national cricket team in the opening match of the three-match ODI series at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Saturday, as the national side marked a historic milestone by playing its 1,000th One-Day International.

The match also witnessed a memorable moment for young all-rounder Arafat Minhas, who made his ODI debut for Pakistan.

Pakistan entered the contest with confidence against Australia in a series that has already generated significant attention due to several major developments in the visiting camp.

Australia suffered a major setback ahead of the series after regular captain Mitchell Marsh was ruled out with an ankle injury. Cricket Australia confirmed that Marsh would miss the entire three-match ODI series against Pakistan.

In Marsh’s absence, wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis was appointed captain of the Australian side.

Mitchell Marsh had recently been representing Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and returned to Australia following the team’s match against Rajasthan Royals on May 19. However, he did not travel to Pakistan after sustaining the ankle injury.

Reports also suggested that Marsh’s participation in Australia’s upcoming ODI and T20 series against Bangladesh national cricket team remains uncertain. Australia are scheduled to begin the ODI series against Bangladesh on June 9, followed by the T20 series starting June 17.

Australia are also missing regular captains Pat Cummins and Travis Head, who were unavailable for the Pakistan tour due to their commitments in the IPL playoff stage.

Despite the absences, the Australian squad features experienced players including Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc.

Young talents Cooper Connolly, Xavier Bartlett, and Ben Dwarshuis were initially unavailable for selection because of IPL playoff commitments.

Mitchell Marsh had enjoyed an outstanding IPL season before his injury, scoring 563 runs in 13 matches at a strike rate of 163.18, making him the tournament’s seventh-highest run-scorer.

With Marsh unavailable, Australia are now exploring new opening combinations for the Pakistan series. Reports suggest that a new partner could open alongside Matthew Short, while Alex Carey is also being considered for a top-order role.

The first ODI is being played in Rawalpindi, while the remaining two matches of the series will take place at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on June 2 and June 4.

Australia’s squad for the Pakistan series includes Josh Inglis (captain), Alex Carey, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Matthew Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Riley Meredith, Ollie Peake, Matthew Renshaw, Tanveer Sangha, Liam Scott, Matthew Short, Billy Stanlake, and Adam Zampa.
