Karachi: Pakistan’s national football team has secured a historic place in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup, marking the country’s first-ever participation in a FIFA-organised tournament outside traditional qualification and continental competitions.
The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) confirmed on Friday that the national side has received an official invitation from FIFA to compete in the newly launched event. The tournament is scheduled to take place in Indonesia from September 21 to October 6.
The FIFA ASEAN Cup aims to expand competitive opportunities for emerging and developing football nations, bringing together teams from across the region in a new international format.

Pakistan will compete in Division 1 alongside regional heavyweights India, hosts Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, setting the stage for a highly competitive contest.
This marks a significant milestone for Pakistan football, as it will be the first time the national team participates in a FIFA tournament of this nature beyond World Cup qualifiers and continental fixtures.
Officials say the inclusion offers Pakistan a valuable opportunity to gain international exposure and test itself against stronger opponents, at a time when the sport in the country is seeking revival and long-term development.
Sources indicated that Pakistan’s participation follows increased engagement between FIFA and PFF President Mohsen Gilani, which played a key role in facilitating the invitation.
