NEW DELHI: Leaders of India’s “cockroach” youth movement announced on Thursday that they would launch nationwide protests if the country’s chief election officer fails to resign within 48 hours, following damaging media revelations regarding voter list manipulations.
The ultimatum comes in the wake of an investigative report by the Indian Express newspaper, which revealed that two election commissioners had raised objections or expressed concerns at least 14 times over a ten-month period.
The internal friction primarily centered on contentious modifications made to voter rolls that began last year, drawing sharp criticism from opposition factions who allege systemic bias.
Opposition parties have long accused the Election Commission of India of acting in favor of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claims that the election panel has consistently denied.
