Motorway Bans Heavy Vehicles Entering Islamabad from Sept 23

ISLAMABAD: Authorities have announced a strict ban on the entry of heavy commercial vehicles travelling from Lahore to Islamabad via the M2 Motorway, effective from September 23.
The decision aims to manage traffic congestion, reduce wear and tear on major infrastructure, and enhance overall commuter safety along the vital inter-provincial trade corridor.
According to traffic management officials, the restrictions will specifically target large cargo trucks, trailers, and overloaded vehicles during peak commuting hours.
Commercial transporters have been advised to utilise alternative routes designated by the National Highway Authority (NHA) and local transport departments to bypass the capital city and minimize disruptions to regular passenger traffic.
The temporary measure is expected to significantly ease traffic pressures on Islamabad’s entry points, particularly the motorway toll plazas where heavy transport often causes severe bottlenecks.
Urban planners note that regulating heavy transport influx is crucial for maintaining highway standards and curbing vehicular emissions within the capital’s surrounding metropolitan limits.
Transport associations have urged authorities to provide clearer guidelines regarding alternative transit corridors. Meanwhile, traffic police teams will be deployed in full strength along the M2 corridor starting September 23 to strictly enforce the new regulations and penalize unauthorized heavy vehicle operators.
