Pakistan Eyes Netflix Deal to Take Local Content Global
News Desk
Islamabad: Pakistan is pushing for greater representation of its films and dramas on international streaming platforms as the government engages with Netflix and other global OTT services to create more opportunities for local creators.
Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal said discussions were underway to establish sustainable partnerships that would help Pakistani content reach wider global audiences.
The move is part of a broader effort to strengthen the country’s entertainment industry and position creative content as an important contributor to Pakistan’s export strategy under the “Uraan Pakistan” initiative.
Iqbal said Pakistani dramas and films have gained international recognition, making the creative sector a key area of growth. He added that platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime have become major channels for reaching global viewers but claimed Pakistani content has not received adequate representation due to regional dynamics.
“Our objective is clear: to secure an equitable share of space and build sustainable partnership opportunities for Pakistani creators,” the minister said.
Alongside negotiations with international streaming platforms, the government is also working on developing a homegrown OTT platform aimed at promoting Pakistani stories and culture to audiences worldwide.
The initiative is expected to provide local filmmakers, producers and artists with new avenues to showcase their work internationally while expanding Pakistan’s presence in the global entertainment market.
