Karachi: They normally navigate Karachi’s narrow streets carrying heavy loads, but dozens of working donkeys found themselves in the spotlight as they raced through the city during an Independence Day sporting event.

The Commissioner’s Cup Donkey Cart Race was held on August 16 as part of Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day celebrations. The 5 to 6-kilometre race started near Native Jetty Bridge and ended at the Karachi Commissioner’s office.

The competition gave the animals a break from their usual role in the city’s informal transport network. Instead of hauling construction materials, agricultural produce, waste and other goods, the donkeys pulled specially designed lightweight carts carrying a single rider.

The racers adopted different techniques as they navigated the course. Some riders crouched low while pulling the reins, while others remained upright as they urged their animals forward, creating a spectacle that drew comparisons with traditional chariot racing.

The finish was marked by scenes of celebration among participants and spectators. One rider was seen embracing his donkey after the race, while the animal appeared to join in the celebration as crowds laughed and cheered.

Beyond the unusual competition, the event offered a glimpse into Karachi’s enduring relationship with donkey carts. Although motorised vehicles dominate the city’s roads, donkeys remain an important source of transport and income in areas where narrow lanes and busy markets make larger vehicles impractical.

For the race participants, however, the animals were not carrying another day’s load. They were competitors, with their riders chasing the prestige of winning a race that has become a distinctive part of Karachi’s Independence Day celebrations.

The event turned familiar symbols of hard work into the stars of a festive spectacle, offering Karachi residents an unusual way to celebrate the country’s national day.
