Islamabad Rehab Centre Death Sparks Torture Allegations
News Desk
Islamabad: A death at a mental health rehabilitation facility in Islamabad has sparked concerns over alleged mistreatment of patients, after a young man died under circumstances his family claims involved torture.
The victim’s family has registered a case against staff members of the Mind Rehab Center, accusing them of involvement in his death. According to relatives, the centre’s staff members allegedly disappeared after shutting down the facility.
In an application submitted to Shahzad Town police, the victim’s father stated that he had admitted his son to the rehabilitation centre in June to help him overcome drug addiction and receive mental health support.
The family alleges that they were not allowed to meet him during his stay at the facility. Speaking to SAMAA, the victim’s uncle said the family was finally informed on July 9 that the young man had developed dengue fever. However, when they reached the hospital, they found him dead and noticed what they described as marks of physical abuse on his body.
Police have launched an investigation following the complaint filed by the victim’s father and are conducting raids to locate and arrest the nominated suspects.
The victim’s body has been shifted for a post-mortem examination, which will help determine the exact cause of death and provide further evidence for the ongoing investigation.
The incident has renewed questions about oversight, safety standards and accountability at rehabilitation centres, particularly those providing care for vulnerable patients seeking recovery and mental health support.
