ISLAMABAD: Two Afghan nationals, identified as Abdullah and Malhay Khan, died after sustaining gunshot wounds during an exchange of fire between police and armed suspects in the jurisdiction of Shahzad Town Police Station, Islamabad Police said.
According to a police spokesperson, the incident occurred when a police team took the two suspects to a junkyard near Rawal Town to arrest their alleged accomplices and recover items, based on information provided by the suspects during custody.
Police said four armed accomplices hiding in nearby wilderness opened indiscriminate fire on the team in an alleged attempt to free the suspects. During the exchange of fire, Abdullah and Malhay Khan sustained injuries from gunfire reportedly fired by their own accomplices.
The police personnel remained unharmed due to their bulletproof vests and other protective measures, the spokesperson said.
The injured suspects were shifted to a hospital for medical treatment, where they later succumbed to their injuries.
According to police, the two men had been arrested and were on physical remand in connection with a case registered at Secretariat Police Station involving the alleged snatching of a mobile phone from a woman, attempted rape and causing injuries.
Meanwhile, the four armed accomplices reportedly escaped under the cover of darkness. Police said search operations were underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
