Invest Pak: How Pakistanis Can Invest in Bonds From Just Rs5,000
News Desk
Islamabad: For years, investing in Pakistan’s government securities was largely limited to banks and major financial institutions.
That has now changed with the launch of Invest Pak, a digital investment platform introduced by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) that enables ordinary citizens to invest directly in government bonds with a minimum investment of Rs5,000.
The platform is designed to make government securities more accessible to individual investors, young people, businesses, and overseas Pakistanis through a fully digital process.
Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb officially launched the Invest Pak portal in Karachi on July 6, describing it as the beginning of a new era for investment in Pakistan.
According to the minister, the platform aims to make investing easier, more transparent, and more efficient for both local and overseas investors.
What are government securities?
Government securities, commonly known as government bonds, are financial instruments through which the government borrows money from investors to finance its spending.
Instead of relying solely on tax revenue or foreign borrowing, the government raises funds by issuing securities for a fixed period. In return, investors receive either periodic profit payments or earnings based on the difference between the purchase price and the amount paid at maturity.
Because these securities are backed by the Government of Pakistan, they are generally considered among the country’s safest investment options.
Who can invest through Invest Pak?
The platform is open to a wide range of investors, including:
Individual Pakistani citizens
Joint account holders
Companies and corporate entities
Overseas Pakistanis with a Roshan Digital Account
Anyone with a bank account in Pakistan can register and invest through the portal.
How to register on Invest Pak
The registration process is completely online and does not require visiting a bank branch.
To create an account:
Register through the Invest Pak website or mobile application.
Enter your CNIC, email address, and mobile number.
Provide the 24-digit IBAN of your bank account.
Your bank will verify the submitted information.
An OTP (One-Time Password) will be sent to your registered mobile number and email.
Enter the OTP to complete verification and activate your account.
What is an IPS Account?
Investors must have an Investor Portfolio Securities (IPS) Account to purchase government securities digitally.
Just as a regular bank account is used to hold money, an IPS account is used to hold government securities in electronic form.
Under SBP regulations, government bonds cannot be purchased or held without an IPS account.
If an investor does not already have one, an online application can be submitted through the Invest Pak portal during registration, eliminating the need to visit a bank.
Once purchased, government securities are stored electronically in the investor’s IPS account rather than being issued as paper certificates.
Govt securities available on Invest Pak
The platform currently offers three major types of government securities:
Market Treasury Bills (MTBs)
Market Treasury Bills are short-term government securities with maturities of three, six, or twelve months.
These securities are sold at a discount instead of paying regular profit. Investors purchase them below their face value and receive the full value when the investment matures.
For example, if a Treasury Bill is purchased for Rs4,000, the investor may receive Rs5,000 at maturity, with the difference representing the investment return.
Pakistan Investment Bonds (PIBs)
Pakistan Investment Bonds are medium and long-term government securities with maturities ranging from two to ten years, and sometimes longer.
Unlike Treasury Bills, PIBs provide regular profit payments, generally every three or six months, while the original investment amount is returned when the bond reaches maturity.
Ijarah Sukuk
The Invest Pak platform also offers Ijarah Sukuk, which are Shariah-compliant government securities designed for investors seeking Islamic investment options.
Instead of earning conventional interest, Sukuk generate returns based on underlying assets and Islamic financing principles, making them suitable for investors looking for halal investment opportunities.
Why Invest Pak matters
The launch of Invest Pak marks a significant step toward expanding financial inclusion in Pakistan by allowing individuals to invest directly in government securities without intermediaries.
With a minimum investment of just Rs5,000, a fully digital registration process, and access for overseas Pakistanis through Roshan Digital Accounts, the platform opens government-backed investment opportunities to a much broader segment of the population.
The initiative is expected to encourage savings, broaden participation in Pakistan’s financial markets, and provide citizens with easier access to low-risk government investment products.
