iPhone 18 Pro Raises Bar With Bigger Battery Gains

Cupertino: Apple has unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at its “Surprise and Shine” event, bringing a major focus on battery performance, camera technology and processing power, but at a higher starting price than last year’s Pro models.
The new flagship iPhones start at $1,199 for the iPhone 18 Pro and $1,299 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, with both models offering 256GB of base storage. That represents a $100 increase over the starting prices of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
For the first time, Apple is also offering a 2TB storage option on both Pro models, targeting users who need substantial space for high-resolution photos, videos and other large files.
Pre-orders are scheduled to open on September 12, with the new iPhones set to reach customers and stores from September 18.
Battery becomes a major selling point
While the higher price may attract attention, Apple has placed particular emphasis on the battery improvements in the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
Apple vice president of hardware engineering Rich Dinh said the iPhone 18 Pro can reach 50 per cent charge in around 15 minutes. The company also claims that just five minutes of charging can provide approximately six hours of video playback.
One of the more notable improvements is the smaller iPhone 18 Pro’s battery performance. Despite its more compact size, Apple says it can deliver battery life comparable to the previous-generation iPhone 17 Pro Max.
According to Apple, the iPhone 18 Pro can provide around 24 hours of battery life under normal use, while the Pro Max can reach approximately 30 hours.
Video playback figures are even higher, with the iPhone 18 Pro rated for around 36 hours and the iPhone 18 Pro Max reaching up to 45 hours, marking a new battery-life record for an iPhone.
A20 Pro brings the next performance jump
Powering the new Pro models is Apple’s A20 Pro chip, built using a 2-nanometre process.
The new processor is designed to deliver higher performance while improving thermal management, potentially allowing the phones to maintain demanding workloads for longer without excessive heat.
The chip is expected to be particularly important for users relying on advanced photography, video editing, gaming and increasingly demanding AI-powered features.
A major camera upgrade
Apple is also presenting the iPhone 18 Pro camera system as one of the biggest photography upgrades in recent years.
The phones feature a 48-megapixel main Fusion camera with variable aperture, giving users greater control over how much light reaches the sensor.
The variable-aperture system could prove particularly useful in changing lighting conditions, allowing the camera to adjust its exposure and depth-of-field characteristics more dynamically.
For Apple, the camera remains one of the central reasons for users to choose the Pro models, particularly as smartphone photography and video continue to replace dedicated cameras for many consumers.
New colours and more storage
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will be offered in black, silver, glacier and a new burgundy finish, giving buyers another visual option alongside the traditional Pro colours.
With the combination of a new processor, upgraded camera hardware, longer battery life and up to 2TB of storage, Apple is positioning the iPhone 18 Pro series as a significant upgrade for users seeking more performance and endurance.
But the higher starting price also raises a question for potential buyers:Do the battery and camera improvements justify paying $100 more for Apple’s latest Pro models?
