GLOF Alert Issued for Upper KP as Glacier Melt Risk Rises
News Desk
Peshawar: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Tuesday issued a high alert for glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in several upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, citing rising temperatures and heavy rainfall as key risk factors.
According to a PDMA spokesperson, districts including Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat and Upper Kohistan are particularly vulnerable, as accelerated glacier melting could lead to sudden lake bursts, triggering flash floods and landslides.

District administrations have been directed to take immediate precautionary measures, including close monitoring of sensitive glacial sites and ensuring early warning systems remain fully functional.
Authorities have also been instructed to conduct evacuation drills in high-risk areas and ensure that designated relief camps are operational and equipped to handle any emergency.
The PDMA has urged residents, especially those living in low-lying and vulnerable areas, to remain vigilant and stay updated on weather advisories. Communities have been encouraged to raise awareness and adopt precautionary measures to minimise potential risks.
Meanwhile, rescue and emergency services have been placed on high alert to ensure a swift response in case of any untoward incident.
