Bayern Defeats Freiburg to Reclaim Bundesliga Leadership
News Desk
FREIBURG: Bayern Munich secured a vital 3-1 victory against Freiburg on Sunday, reclaiming the top spot in the Bundesliga just days after coach Vincent Kompany was hospitalized due to a sudden illness during training.
Despite missing several key players, including Kompany, Bayern established a commanding two-goal lead by halftime, with Dayot Upamecano and Serge Gnabry finding the net.
Freiburg managed to reduce the deficit, but in a dramatic finish, Michael Olise sealed the win for Bayern by scoring into an empty net after Freiburg’s goalkeeper Mio Backhaus ventured too far upfield.
Kompany remains hospitalized, receiving treatment for an undisclosed virus, but Bayern officials indicated that he is stable and expected to be out for only a few days.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks shared that Kompany expressed his pride in the team’s performance via a text message, emphasizing the strong bond within the squad.
As Bayern looks to maintain their momentum in the league, the club is closely monitoring Kompany’s recovery. Sporting director Max Eberl confirmed that while there is no definitive diagnosis yet, the situation is being managed carefully.
The team will prepare for their upcoming fixtures with the hope of having their coach back on the sidelines soon.
