Islamabad: Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi held high-level meetings with Pakistan’s top leadership on Saturday, as regional diplomacy intensifies amid tentative hopes of renewed engagement between Iran and the United States.
The Iranian foreign minister met separately with Syed Asim Munir, who holds the rank of field marshal, and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar. The visiting delegation was received by both leaders upon arrival in Islamabad.
According to diplomatic sources, Araqchi is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif later in the day. Sources said the Iranian envoy first held talks with Ishaq Dar and is expected to call on the prime minister alongside him.

The visit comes at a critical time, with indications of possible diplomatic movement between Tehran and Washington. Araqchi is believed to have arrived with fresh proposals, while the White House has indicated that US advisers Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are expected to travel to Pakistan.
However, Iranian officials have downplayed the prospect of direct engagement during the visit. Esmail Baqai confirmed that no meetings are scheduled between Iranian and US representatives during Araqchi’s stay in Islamabad.
Speaking to foreign media, Baqai said the Iranian delegation would share its assessments with Pakistani officials and discuss efforts to end what he described as an “aggressive war imposed by the US” while exploring pathways to restore regional peace.
He added that talks would also focus on Pakistan’s ongoing mediation role and broader diplomatic efforts to ease tensions in the region.
The meetings underscore Islamabad’s growing role as a potential intermediary as multiple stakeholders seek to revive dialogue and prevent further escalation in the Middle East.
