TEHRAN: A high-level meeting involving Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye has concluded in Tehran with the four countries agreeing to strengthen cooperation on regional security, promote diplomatic dialogue and pursue joint efforts to maintain peace and stability amid escalating regional tensions.

The meeting, held on Monday and hosted by Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, brought together senior military, defense and intelligence officials from the four countries.

The discussions highlighted growing diplomatic efforts among key regional powers to address security challenges and prevent further escalation of conflicts.

According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, Saudi Arabia’s Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, and Ibrahim Kalin, head of Türkiye’s National Intelligence Organization, participated in the meeting. Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also attended.

A statement issued after the meeting said the four countries had agreed to expand cooperation on regional peace and security and continue consultations aimed at strengthening stability. The participants also emphasized the importance of sustained communication and coordinated efforts to address shared regional challenges.

The Tehran meeting marked the first gathering of the four countries at this level in the Iranian capital, according to the reports. The discussions reflected a shared interest in maintaining diplomatic engagement at a time when regional conflicts and military tensions have intensified.

Regional tensions dominate discussions

According to Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, the talks covered regional security developments, the consequences of military actions by the United States and Israel, and humanitarian assistance for people in Palestine and Lebanon.

The discussions underscored the importance of political coordination among Muslim-majority countries as they seek to respond to mounting security challenges and humanitarian concerns across the region.

Following the meeting, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held discussions with Prince Khalid bin Salman, Field Marshal Asim Munir and Ibrahim Kalin. During the meeting, Pezeshkian said Iran supported any consensus that could strengthen unity among Islamic countries and contribute to regional security and development.

He stressed that Muslim nations needed to stand together to confront threats facing their populations, adding that greater coordination and cooperation could play an important role in promoting stability and development.

According to IRNA, the Iranian president reiterated Tehran’s support for initiatives designed to improve regional cooperation and strengthen coordination among Islamic nations.

Saudi Arabia highlights diplomatic efforts

Saudi Arabia described Prince Khalid bin Salman’s visit to Tehran as part of its broader efforts to reduce tensions and advance diplomatic solutions to regional disputes.

In a statement shared on the social media platform X, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the visit reflected the kingdom’s continued commitment to promoting dialogue and peace at both regional and international levels.

The ministry also referred to sustained efforts by the member states of the Makkah defense agreement to de-escalate tensions, encourage communication between the parties involved and pursue diplomatic approaches to resolving conflicts.

Riyadh said the visit was intended to support ongoing mediation efforts by Qatar and Pakistan, as the two countries work to encourage dialogue and advance diplomatic channels to address the crisis.

The Saudi position highlighted the role of regional diplomacy in preventing further confrontation and creating opportunities for negotiated solutions.

Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue

Pakistan has emerged as an important participant in the latest diplomatic efforts involving Iran and other regional powers.

According to IRNA, Field Marshal Asim Munir proposed convening a joint meeting of senior officials during his visit to Tehran the previous week. During that visit, he also met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other senior Iranian officials, including Mohsen Rezaei.

Ali Bagheri, Deputy Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, subsequently confirmed that the Saudi defense minister, Pakistan’s army chief and Türkiye’s intelligence chief would hold consultations with Iranian officials on regional security.

The subsequent meeting brought the four countries together for discussions on security cooperation and diplomatic coordination, reinforcing the importance of sustained engagement among regional stakeholders.

Wider regional implications

The meeting comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, including concerns over military escalation and attacks affecting regional security. According to Reuters, it was the first high-level meeting of Iran with the three other countries in this diplomatic format following an escalation in Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.

Qatari mediators also met Iranian officials in Tehran on Sunday as part of efforts to ease regional tensions, according to the reports.

Although the four countries have different strategic interests and foreign policy priorities, their agreement to maintain dialogue signals a willingness to pursue cooperation on shared security concerns.

Whether the consultations lead to concrete joint initiatives remains to be seen. However, the commitment to continued dialogue provides a diplomatic channel through which the countries can address emerging threats, support mediation efforts and seek to prevent further regional instability.

For Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Iran, maintaining communication and exploring areas of common interest could prove increasingly important as diplomatic efforts continue to navigate a volatile regional environment.
