ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to meet Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman on Tuesday afternoon to discuss rising petroleum prices and the party’s demand for the abolition of the petroleum levy.
The meeting, scheduled at the delegation level, is expected to focus on eliminating the levy and reducing the prices of petrol and diesel. The government’s delegation will include Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Rana Sanaullah and Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik.
The proposed meeting follows a series of high-level contacts between the government and Jamaat-e-Islami aimed at addressing the party’s demands concerning fuel prices and petroleum taxation.
On Monday, Ahsan Iqbal contacted Jamaat-e-Islami Deputy Emir Liaquat Baloch to discuss arrangements for the meeting between the prime minister and Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman.
Liaquat Baloch confirmed that the Jamaat-e-Islami chief would meet Shehbaz Sharif with the abolition of the petroleum levy as a key item on the agenda.
Jamaat-e-Islami has been demanding the withdrawal of the levy, calling for measures to reduce the financial burden of fuel prices on consumers.
The upcoming talks will provide an opportunity for the party to present its demands directly to the government. The outcome may indicate whether the government is willing to consider changes to the petroleum levy and introduce measures to provide relief to fuel consumers.
