Protests Leave 112 Cops Injured, Several Missing: DIG Lahore

Lahore: Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations Faisal Kamran on Saturday said that 112 policemen were injured and several others went missing following violent protests by a religious-political group that erupted across Lahore three days ago.

Addressing a press conference, the DIG said there was credible information and video evidence indicating that some police personnel had been taken hostage by protesters. He added that widespread vandalism, looting, and destruction of public and private property had been reported in various parts of the city.

He said the protests began over a minor issue but quickly turned violent, severely disrupting law and order across the provincial capital. “Whenever the nation moves toward progress and stability, certain groups with hidden agendas attempt to create unrest. This so-called protest was started on a baseless issue, and instead of dialogue or peaceful negotiation, the organizers resorted to violence,” he remarked.Rawalpindi Police on High Alert to Maintain PeaceDIG Kamran said that despite repeated efforts by the police and administration to engage the protest leaders through dialogue, they refused to cooperate. “We kept all doors of negotiation open, offering multiple peaceful options, but they chose confrontation over calm,” he stated.

He confirmed that hundreds of police officials were injured in the clashes, with several hospitalized and some still missing. “It is deeply regrettable that those who work to maintain peace are being held hostage, and the perpetrators are sharing videos online as trophies,” he said.

According to the DIG, protesters vandalized police stations, government buildings, and public infrastructure, including the Shahdara Town Police Station and Orange Line Metro stations. “They damaged the Orange Line structure and celebrated their actions as if it were a victory,” he added.

He said vehicles belonging to government departments, including the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC), Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), Rescue 1122, and Suthra Punjab, were destroyed or seized by mobs. Citizens also reported multiple incidents of snatching, looting, and road blockades. “At Shahdara Town Police Station alone, 18 motorcycles of on-duty officers were forcibly taken away — acts that amount to organized robberies,” he noted.

The DIG said that the violent demonstrations had paralyzed routine life in the city, preventing citizens from reaching hospitals, schools, and workplaces. “Ordinary citizens are the real victims. Their peace and mobility have been hijacked by a handful of violent elements,” he lamented.

He confirmed that more than 100 suspects had been arrested so far, and separate FIRs were being registered for each area where incidents of vandalism or attacks on police occurred. “We have complete CCTV and video evidence, and every perpetrator will be brought to justice,” he asserted.

Reiterating the state’s resolve to maintain order, DIG Kamran said the police, along with other law enforcement agencies, were working round the clock to restore peace. “The right to protest is guaranteed, but violence, looting, and destruction of property will not be tolerated. The state will protect its citizens at all costs,” he emphasized.
