PM, Field Marshal Join New Council to Oversee Population Policy

Islamabad: The federal government has established a National Population Council to formulate and oversee a coordinated national strategy aimed at managing the country’s growing population.
According to an official notification, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will chair the 16-member council, which includes senior federal and provincial leadership. Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has also been appointed as a member.
The council comprises the chief ministers of all four provinces, the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Federal cabinet members serving on the council include the ministers for finance, planning, national health services, education, law and justice, information and broadcasting, and religious affairs.
According to the notification, the National Population Council will develop a comprehensive and effective policy framework to address rapid population growth and ensure close coordination between the federal and provincial governments on population management initiatives.
The government said the council will also engage religious scholars, civil society organizations, and the private sector in a nationwide awareness campaign to promote family planning and improve public understanding of population-related issues.
In addition, the council will periodically review the implementation of the national population policy and propose measures to strengthen coordination and cooperation among relevant institutions to achieve population management objectives.
