NDMA Warns of Intense Heatwave Across Pakistan

News Desk

Islamabad: As Pakistan braces for rising temperatures, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has begun coordination with provincial disaster management authorities (PDMAs) and health departments to prepare for a potentially severe heatwave expected between mid-April and June.

NDMA General Manager Technical Syed Muhammad Tayyab Shah said the country could experience harsher heat conditions compared to previous years, with temperatures expected to rise significantly in several regions.

Highlighting the reasons behind recurring heatwaves, Shah attributed the growing intensity to dry weather conditions and below-average rainfall. He said joint advisories are being prepared with provincial authorities to ensure timely action and public awareness.

Focusing on vulnerable groups, the NDMA official stressed the need for schools to develop heat emergency plans, with teachers and staff trained to provide immediate assistance in cases of heat-related illness, as delayed treatment during heatstroke can prove fatal.

He also called for the establishment of dedicated heatstroke units in hospitals to manage emergency cases and provide timely medical support.

The NDMA has urged citizens to take preventive measures, including increasing water intake, avoiding unnecessary outdoor exposure during peak heat hours, and wearing light, comfortable clothing.

With extreme temperatures becoming more frequent, authorities say preparedness and public awareness will be key to reducing heat-related health risks across the country.
