Karachi Court Sentences Marketing Trainer to 10 Years for Clifton Rape

KARACHI: A sessions court in Karachi has sentenced a corporate marketing trainer to ten years in prison after convicting him of sexually assaulting a female trainee at a guest house in the Clifton area.
Additional District and Sessions Judge (South) Abdul Zahoor Chandio handed down the verdict against Asad Anwar, while also imposing a fine of Rs 200,000, which must be paid directly to the survivor as financial compensation.
According to State Prosecutor Irfana Qadri, the victim was a newly hired employee undergoing orientation under Anwar’s supervision.
After the victim expressed her desire to resign four days into her training, the convict lured her to a local guest house under the guise of an official discussion, where he carried out the assault.
Crucial evidence, including verified CCTV footage and booking documentation, unequivocally proved Anwar’s presence at the scene during the time of the crime.
Addressing the arguments raised by the defense regarding a delay in lodging the First Information Report (FIR), the court observed that established judicial precedents firmly hold that procedural delays in reporting sexual violence do not weaken the prosecution’s case, given the social stigma and trauma involved.
Legal experts note that this judgment reinforces Pakistan’s evolving legal jurisprudence surrounding workplace safety, ensuring that technological evidence such as surveillance logs can effectively outweigh defense technicalities.
Following the delivery of the judgment, the convict was taken into custody to begin serving his prison sentence, while his defense team expressed intentions to appeal the decision before the Sindh High Court.
The verdict serves as a significant marker for victim protection and accountability within urban corporate environments across the country.
