Highest-Level Haze Alert for Southeast Asia

KUALA LUMPUR: Fires in Indonesia have unleashed toxic smoke across Southeast Asia, prompting the region’s meteorological authority to issue its highest-level alert.

The haze has disrupted daily life in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and East Timor, leading to school closures and a rise in respiratory illnesses.

The ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) announced on Friday that it activated ‘Alert Level 3 for the Southern ASEAN region,’ indicating a high risk of severe transboundary haze.

This alert is triggered when moderate to dense smoke persists over two or more consecutive days, affecting air quality and public health.

Local residents are feeling the impact, with many calling for urgent action from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Zul Hafiz, a teacher from Malaysia, expressed frustration, stating,

‘This thing needs to stop.’ The ongoing pollution crisis has not only affected health but also limited outdoor activities and economic productivity in the region.

As the situation escalates, ASEAN member states are expected to convene to discuss coordinated responses and mitigation strategies.

The ASMC’s alert serves as a critical reminder of the need for regional cooperation in addressing environmental challenges.
