Heavy Rain Floods Tents of Displaced People in Gaza

News Desk

GAZA CITY: Heavy rains on Saturday inundated tens of thousands of tents housing displaced individuals in Gaza, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn region, according to Palestinian authorities.

The Hamas-run government reported that approximately 70,000 tents were affected on the first day of the downpour, leaving many without adequate shelter.

In addition to the flooding, there were reports of structural collapses, with dozens of cracked walls and roofs giving way, resulting in injuries, some of which are critical. Civil defence spokesman Mahmoud Bassal informed AFP that his teams received over 1,500 emergency calls overnight from residents seeking urgent assistance, highlighting the dire situation as the agency struggles to operate without sufficient equipment or resources.

Humanitarian organizations and civil society groups have raised alarms about potential disease outbreaks due to the flooding, urging the international community to pressure Israel to allow the entry of much-needed aid. An urgent distress call has been issued to save hundreds of thousands of displaced individuals from the adverse effects of the storm.

As the situation develops, humanitarian organizations are expected to mobilize resources and coordinate with local authorities to address the immediate needs of the affected population. Continued advocacy for international support and intervention remains critical to mitigate the impact of this disaster.
