Bangladesh Set to Surpass India in Per Capita GDP This Year

News Desk

DHAKA: Bangladesh is projected to surpass India in per capita GDP for the first time this year, marking a significant milestone in the region’s economic landscape.

This shift is expected to occur amid ongoing economic challenges and recovery efforts post-pandemic.

According to recent forecasts, Bangladesh’s per capita GDP is anticipated to reach approximately $2,500, compared to India’s $2,400.

Economists attribute this growth to Bangladesh’s robust garment industry, remittances from overseas workers, and a growing domestic market.

“This achievement reflects the resilience of the Bangladeshi economy and its ability to adapt to global changes,” said Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur, an economist and director of the Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh.

The implications of this economic shift are profound. For Bangladeshi citizens, surpassing India in per capita GDP could enhance national pride and attract foreign investment.

However, experts caution that this figure alone does not provide a complete picture of economic health, as challenges such as income inequality and inflation persist.

“While the numbers are promising, we must focus on sustainable growth that benefits all segments of society,” added Dr. Mansur.

Looking ahead, both countries are expected to continue their economic strategies, with Bangladesh focusing on diversifying its economy and India addressing its structural challenges.

Upcoming economic forums and bilateral discussions will likely explore cooperation in trade and investment, further shaping the economic dynamics of South Asia.
