396 Candidates, 24 Seats: GB Set for Crucial Elections Tomorrow

Gilgit: The fourth general elections of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly will be held tomorrow (Sunday), with 396 candidates contesting for seats in 24 constituencies across the region.

After weeks of intensive electioneering marked by public rallies, corner meetings, campaign promises and political accusations, the final decision now rests with approximately 958,000 registered voters who will elect their representatives for the next assembly.

The Election Commission has completed all necessary arrangements to ensure peaceful, transparent and orderly polling. 

A total of 1,368 polling stations have been established across Gilgit-Baltistan for voters to exercise their democratic right.

According to official figures, the total number of registered voters stands at 958,480, including 537,772 male voters and 454,708 female voters.

The election race features candidates from major political parties as well as a significant number of independents.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has fielded candidates in 23 constituencies, while the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is contesting 22 seats.

The Pakistan Stability Party has entered 15 candidates in the contest, while the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) has nominated 11 candidates. In addition, 10 candidates from the Pakistani Ideological Party are also participating in the elections.

Nineteen candidates affiliated with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are contesting as independents, while the overall number of independent candidates has reached 266, making the electoral contest particularly competitive in several constituencies.

Eight women candidates are also in the race, seeking to secure representation from different constituencies across the region.

Political activity remained intense throughout the campaign period, with parties focusing on development agendas, governance issues and local concerns while also trading criticism of their opponents.

Political observers believe the outcome of the Gilgit-Baltistan elections could have implications beyond the region, influencing broader national political dynamics. As a result, major political parties and analysts across the country are closely watching the election process and awaiting the results.
