Islamabad: The government is reportedly preparing to push a surprise bill through the National Assembly today, with parliamentary sources indicating that the legislation could be introduced and passed in a single sitting.

According to sources, the proposed bill is expected to be placed before the National Assembly through a supplementary agenda, alongside the House’s scheduled business. The government is likely to seek suspension of the relevant parliamentary rules to allow the legislation to be introduced and passed without the usual procedural delays.

Before its presentation in the National Assembly, the bill will reportedly be placed before the federal cabinet for final approval and to complete the required legal formalities.

If cleared by the cabinet, the legislation will be presented before the National Assembly for consideration. Following approval by the lower house, it will be forwarded to the Senate for the next stage of the parliamentary process.

The government is also focusing on ensuring the required numbers in the National Assembly. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership has directed its lawmakers to maintain full attendance during today’s sitting to avoid any disruption to the proposed legislative process.

The identity and contents of the proposed bill have not been disclosed in the information available from parliamentary sources.

The planned same-day legislative process could draw attention because bills normally pass through a series of parliamentary procedures before reaching final approval. Any decision to suspend the House rules would therefore allow the government to move the legislation considerably faster than the standard process.
