Rubio Visits India Amid Stalled Trade Deal Negotiations
News Desk
NEW DELHI: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio embarks on his second visit to India this year, aiming to strengthen bilateral ties despite ongoing challenges in finalizing a crucial trade deal.
During his upcoming six-day trip, Rubio will engage with senior Indian officials, focusing on investment and energy sectors in Mumbai and Jamnagar, home to the world’s largest refining complex owned by billionaire Mukesh Ambani.
Notably, he will avoid the Indian capital, New Delhi, during this visit.
The persistent delay in sealing the long-anticipated trade agreement looms large over discussions.
Experts attribute the stalemate to various factors, including former President Donald Trump’s tariff policies, disputes over energy imports, and the US’s increasingly cordial relations with Pakistan, India’s historical rival.
Rubio’s journey begins on Saturday with a stop in Uzbekistan before arriving in India.
As the US seeks to enhance its strategic partnership with India, the path forward for the trade deal remains uncertain, with both nations needing to address significant hurdles to reach a consensus.
