Robotic Police to Patrol Streets for Bicycle Safety in Dubai

News Desk

Dubai: Dubai is gearing up to introduce a cutting-edge robotic police officer powered by AI to enforce safety regulations concerning bicycles and electric scooters.

This innovative robot, equipped with advanced facial recognition technology, will patrol the city streets, ensuring compliance with safety measures such as wearing helmets and using designated lanes.

Initially, the robot will be deployed along the public beach area, with a primary focus on monitoring and addressing violations related to unauthorized cycling, improper parking, and exceeding passenger limits.

It will connect detected violations to individuals through their biometric identity cards.

Hamad Alafeefi, the Director of the Roads and Transport Authority’s Enterprise Command and Control Department, mentioned that the trial phase, which commenced last week, aims to evaluate the accuracy of the robot in detecting violations.

While fines will not be issued during this testing period, the robot will meticulously analyze video footage using AI algorithms to identify and document infractions.

As the trial progresses, the RTA expressed openness to integrating additional technologies in subsequent phases, with the goal of further enhancing the robot’s capabilities.

The rise of AI-powered robotic police is gaining momentum globally, with Singapore leading the charge by deploying patrol robots across the city-state.

This initiative follows successful trials at Changi Airport’s Terminal 4 and aims to address manpower shortages resulting from Singapore’s small population and low birth rate.

While the UAE’s adoption of robotic police appears promising, it’s imperative to thoroughly assess various considerations.

Privacy concerns, data security, and the accuracy and reliability of these robots in dynamically changing environments must be carefully evaluated to mitigate unintended consequences or errors in law enforcement.
