MUMBAI: Bollywood actor Imran Khan, nephew of Aamir Khan, has reportedly been directed to leave India by October 28 following a notice issued by Mumbai Police over his participation in a political protest.

According to Indian media reports, police have initiated action against the actor under immigration laws after he took part in a demonstration at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai on October 10. The protesters were demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner.

During the incident, police also detained Imran Khan’s co-star Lekha Washington and his cousin Zayn Marie Khan in connection with their participation in the protest.

Police sources cited in media reports said the action against Imran Khan was initiated because he reportedly holds United States citizenship rather than Indian citizenship. Foreign nationals are subject to restrictions on participating in political activities in India.

Although Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders are permitted to live in India and enjoy certain privileges, they are not granted the full political rights available to Indian citizens. OCI status also comes with specific legal restrictions.

According to the reports, the notice issued by Mumbai Police requires the actor to leave India by October 28. However, further details regarding the legal proceedings and the actor’s response to the notice have not been reported.

Imran Khan rose to prominence in Bollywood with his debut film Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, which established him as a popular face in the industry. While he has remained relatively inactive in films in recent years, his personal life and public appearances continue to attract media attention.
