PESHAWAR: Uncertainty surrounds the whereabouts of several Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders following reports of detentions in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa after the imposition of a state of emergency and Governor’s Rule in the province.

Police have confirmed taking eight PTI leaders into protective custody, citing security concerns and the prevailing law-and-order situation. However, officials maintain that no political leader has been formally arrested, while the party claims that several of its senior figures have been detained.

Among the leaders whose custody or whereabouts have become a focus of concern are Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, Provincial Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati, PTI provincial president Junaid Akbar, and former chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur.

PTI Deputy Information Secretary Ikram Khatana has claimed that Afridi was arrested and shifted to an undisclosed location. He also alleged that Junaid Akbar, Babar Saleem Swati and Member of the National Assembly Shahid Khattak had been detained.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the whereabouts of the party’s senior leadership, with police describing the reported custody as a protective measure and PTI alleging arrests.

The developments come amid major administrative changes in the province following the imposition of emergency measures and Governor’s Rule under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution. According to the information provided, the provincial cabinet has been dissolved and administrative affairs transferred to a caretaker administration.

The whereabouts and custody status of the named leaders could not be independently established from the information available. Further clarification from police and provincial authorities is needed to determine which leaders remain in protective custody, which have been formally arrested, and who is still unaccounted for.
