NZ Bracewell Shifts to Casual Contract, Pursues BBL Opportunity

News Desk

WELLINGTON: New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell transitions to a casual contract for the 2026-27 season, aiming to seize an opportunity in Australia’s lucrative Big Bash League (BBL), the New Zealand Cricket (NZC) board announced on Monday.

Bracewell, who has represented New Zealand in 105 matches across all formats, is set to participate in the upcoming limited-overs series against India later this month.

The 35-year-old joins a growing list of players, including Mark Chapman and Lockie Ferguson, who have opted for the casual contract system, which allows them to compete in high-paying Twenty20 leagues while remaining available for national selection.

“As a white-ball only player, this felt like too good of an opportunity to pass up,” Bracewell stated, emphasizing his commitment to the Black Caps and his eagerness to contribute in the forthcoming India tour and future white-ball series.

His decision reflects a broader trend among cricketers seeking to balance national duties with lucrative T20 opportunities.

In light of Bracewell’s shift, batter Nick Kelly will take his place on NZC’s central contract list.

As the cricketing landscape evolves, fans and analysts will be keenly watching how this move impacts both Bracewell’s career and the New Zealand team dynamics in the lead-up to significant international fixtures.
