UN Guterres Visits Pakistan to Strengthen Multilateralism Efforts

ISLAMABAD: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is scheduled to visit Pakistan from October 6 to 8, as announced by the Foreign Office (FO). His visit aims to underscore Islamabad’s commitment to enhancing multilateralism and international cooperation.
During his stay, Guterres will engage with key Pakistani leaders, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar.
Additionally, he will meet with Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir. The FO highlighted that Guterres will also visit the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) and participate in a briefing at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) headquarters.
This visit is particularly significant as it coincides with the conclusion of Guterres’s decade-long tenure as UN chief, set to end on December 31.
It presents an opportunity for Pakistan to showcase its ongoing efforts in disaster preparedness and early warning systems, as well as its role in promoting international peace and security.
Looking ahead, Guterres’s meetings are expected to foster discussions on regional stability and Pakistan’s longstanding cooperation with the UN.
This visit could pave the way for enhanced collaboration on global challenges, reflecting Pakistan’s strategic importance in multilateral dialogues.
