Monsoon rains turn deadly in KP, 28 killed

Peshawar : At least 28 people have been killed and 29 others injured as torrential monsoon rains and flash floods continued to batter several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said on Friday.

According to the latest damage assessment report issued by PDMA, the deaths occurred in incidents involving the collapse of roofs and walls, while several people were swept away by flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall since July 19.

The deceased include 10 men, three women, and 15 children, while the injured comprise 13 men, nine women, and seven children, the authority said.

The ongoing monsoon spell has also caused widespread damage to property, with 47 houses affected across the province. Of these, 37 houses were partially damaged, while 10 were completely destroyed, according to PDMA.

Rain-related incidents have been reported from several districts, including Peshawar, Nowshera, Khyber, Mardan, Buner, Bajaur, Shangla, Swabi, Upper and Lower Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, Upper Kohistan, Tank, Tor Ghar, Kurram, and North and South Waziristan.

PDMA said rescue and relief operations are continuing in coordination with Rescue 1122, district administrations, and other relevant departments to assist affected communities.

The authority has directed district administrations to speed up relief activities and ensure timely provision of essential supplies and assistance to families impacted by the floods and rainfall-related incidents.

Meanwhile, residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from vulnerable areas, particularly risky tourist destinations, and follow official weather warnings and safety advisories.

PDMA’s Emergency Operation Centre remains active around the clock, while citizens can contact the authority’s toll-free helpline 1700 for emergency assistance and weather-related information.
