Google’s Pixel 11 Unveiled With 3nm Tensor G6 Chip

Islamabad: Google’s Pixel 11 generation will not debut with the much-anticipated 2nm smartphone processor, with the company confirming that its new Tensor G6 chip is instead manufactured using TSMC’s 3nm process.

The confirmation, reported after Google’s Made by Google event, ends speculation that the Tensor G6 would become the first smartphone chip built on TSMC’s 2nm technology, potentially giving Google an edge over rivals such as Apple in adopting the next-generation manufacturing process.

Despite the change, Google says the Tensor G6 delivers substantial improvements in performance, artificial intelligence and security.

The company claims the upgraded CPU enables web browsing to be up to 25 per cent faster, while app launches are 15 per cent quicker. The chip also provides 50 per cent more TPU computing power, strengthening the Pixel 11’s ability to handle AI tasks directly on the device.

The Tensor G6 will support a new generation of Google’s Gemini Nano on-device AI model, allowing more AI processing to take place locally on the phone.

Google has also upgraded the image signal processor, promising faster Night Sight photography and improved digital zoom performance. Security has received an upgrade as well, with the Tensor G6 paired with the new Titan M3 security chip.

The decision to remain on TSMC’s 3nm process could limit some of the efficiency gains expected from a move to 2nm technology. However, Google appears to be placing greater emphasis on practical performance and AI capabilities with this generation.

Earlier reports had suggested the Tensor G6 would use newer ARM CPU cores while retaining a comparatively less powerful GPU than some competing flagship smartphone processors.

The Pixel 11 series also brings other hardware changes, including relocating the NFC antenna to the top of the device to make features such as payments and Tap to Share more convenient.

The company is additionally highlighting improvements to the Pixel 11 Pro displays, including a claimed more than twofold increase in scratch resistance.

While the Tensor G6 may not deliver the expected manufacturing breakthrough, Google is positioning the Pixel 11 as a generation focused on faster everyday performance, expanded on-device AI and improved photography rather than simply competing on chip fabrication technology.
