Floods, Landslides Claim 68 Lives Across India and Nepal

NEW DELHI: Unrelenting heavy downpours have unleashed devastating floods and landslides across northern India and Nepal, claiming at least 68 lives over a frantic three-day period, disaster management authorities confirmed on Sunday.
The catastrophe has severely disrupted normal life, triggered widespread infrastructure collapse, and left thousands displaced in the region’s latest weather-induced emergency.
In India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, the relief commissioner’s office reported a staggering 56 fatalities within the past three days alone, alongside the destruction of over 1,000 residential properties.
Meanwhile, neighboring Nepal found itself reeling from a fresh wave of disasters. Shanti Mahat, spokesperson for Nepal’s disaster authority, stated that 12 people have perished in rain-related incidents since Thursday, with an additional seven individuals remaining unaccounted for as rescue teams battle treacherous terrain.
This fresh onslaught compounds an already precarious humanitarian situation in Nepal, which is still struggling to recover from the catastrophic August 26 floods.
Triggered by a massive glacial mountain collapse along the China-Nepal border, last month’s disaster claimed more than 1,400 lives and left thousands missing. Environmental scientists have repeatedly warned of escalating extreme weather anomalies across South Asia, directly correlating these intensifying catastrophes with rising global temperatures and shifting regional climate paradigms.
Authorities across both nations have mobilized emergency response units to accelerate rescue operations, deliver vital relief supplies, and evacuate stranded communities from high-risk zones. Meteorological departments have issued ongoing warnings for further precipitation, prompting disaster management agencies to maintain high alert statuses while conducting detailed damage assessments in the worst-affected sectors.
