KARACHI: In a major crackdown against illicit trade, customs authorities at Jinnah International Airport successfully foiled a smuggling attempt, recovering 14 brand-new iPhone devices and two bottles of liquor from a passenger arriving from a foreign destination.
According to preliminary details shared by the customs intelligence wing, the contraband was meticulously concealed within the personal luggage and specialized cavities of the suspect’s belongings.
Acting on a credible tip-off regarding narcotics and electronic smuggling, the vigilance team intercepted the traveler immediately after disembarking, conducting a thorough manual and digital scan of the cargo.
The interception highlights persistent challenges faced by border control agencies at Pakistan’s primary aviation hubs, where organized rings frequently exploit lax baggage screening protocols to smuggle high-value luxury goods and avoid heavy import duties.
Electronics, particularly premium smartphones, remain prime targets for smugglers due to soaring domestic tax structures and high market demand.
