Washington: US authorities have identified a 31-year-old man from California as the primary suspect in the attempted attack targeting President Donald Trump during a high-profile event in the capital.

According to law enforcement officials, the suspect, described as a teacher, was taken into custody following a swift security response. He was reportedly armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun, a pistol, and a knife, when he approached a secured area and attempted to breach it.

A member of the United States Secret Service was struck during the incident but avoided serious injury due to a bulletproof vest. Authorities say the officer is in stable condition.

Investigators have since moved to secure the suspect’s residence in California, while additional inquiries are underway to determine whether he acted alone. Early assessments suggest the attacker was a “lone actor,” though officials say the motive remains unclear.

During a press briefing, the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia confirmed that the suspect was not shot during the operation and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Police are also examining a room at the Washington Hilton, where the suspect is believed to have been staying.

The United States Department of Justice said the suspect will be formally arraigned in court on Monday. He faces charges including assault on a federal officer and weapons-related offenses.

Speaking after the incident, President Trump credited security personnel for their rapid response, stating that their actions likely prevented greater harm. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.
