Islamabad: A dessert that first gained popularity through short social media videos is now making its way onto dining tables across Islamabad, as families embrace homemade mango sago as this summer’s favourite sweet treat.

With Pakistan’s mango season at its peak, the chilled dessert has become a household staple rather than just a café specialty. Inspired by recipes circulating on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, many residents are choosing to prepare mango sago at home for family gatherings, weekend dinners and festive occasions.

Combining ripe mangoes with sago pearls, mango purée, milk or coconut milk, cream, condensed milk and ice, the dessert has gained popularity for its refreshing taste, simple preparation and vibrant presentation.

The growing trend reflects a broader shift in consumer habits, where social media is influencing not only what people eat but also encouraging them to recreate restaurant-style dishes in their own kitchens.

For many families, preparing mango sago has become more than just cooking, it has turned into a shared activity.

Zarmina, a resident of Bara Kahu, said she discovered the recipe online before deciding to make it for her family.

“It was an instant hit. Now I prepare it whenever relatives or friends visit because everyone enjoys it,” she said, adding that the ingredients are affordable and easily available in local markets.

She noted that its cool and refreshing flavour makes it especially popular during Islamabad’s hot summer weather.

Fawad, another resident, said homemade mango sago has gradually replaced store-bought desserts at his family’s weekend gatherings.

“We used to order desserts from cafés, but now we prepare mango sago together at home. It’s economical, tastes great and gives the whole family something fun to do,” he said.

He added that family members often work together by peeling mangoes, cooking the sago and decorating the dessert before serving it.

University student Maria believes the dessert’s popularity demonstrates the growing influence of digital platforms on everyday lifestyles.

“People no longer just watch food videos—they actually recreate them,” she said. “Making café-style desserts at home has become an enjoyable experience that families can share.”

Nutrition experts, however, advise moderation despite the dessert’s popularity.

Dr. Sara, a nutritionist at a private hospital in Islamabad, said mangoes are naturally rich in vitamins A and C, antioxidants and dietary fibre, making them a nutritious seasonal fruit.

She explained that while mango sago can be a healthier dessert when prepared with fresh fruit, its calorie content rises considerably when large amounts of cream, condensed milk and added sugar are used.

“Reducing added sugar and relying more on fresh mangoes can make it a healthier option,” she advised.

The trend has also boosted demand for fresh mangoes in local markets, with home cooks experimenting with creative variations by adding basil seeds, jelly, seasonal fruits and even ice cream.

As social media continues to shape food culture, mango sago has emerged as more than just a viral recipe, it has become a symbol of how online trends are transforming homemade cooking into a shared summer tradition in the capital.
